Signs My Light-Duty Truck’s Spark Plugs Are Bad

Moose Jaw Truck Shop can help if it is time to have the spark plugs changed in your light-duty truck. If you drive a heavy-duty truck that runs on gasoline instead of diesel fuel, there are also spark plugs and that engine. The time at which the spark plugs need to be changed depends on the age of your truck. Older trucks need to have new plugs every 30,000 miles, and newer trucks need to have new plugs every 100,000 miles. Let’s talk about the signs that your truck’s spark plugs are bad below.

Difficulty Starting the Truck

There’s no way around it. You will have difficulties starting your truck if the spark plugs are bad. In the engine, the cylinder block contains a number of cylinders in which air and fuel are placed. There is a spark plug for each cylinder that sends a spark into the cylinder to ignite the air and fuel. If you are having problems with your plugs, the engine may not start because the air and fuel are not ignited.

A Rough Engine Idle

Unfortunately, this is not the only problem you will have with your light-duty truck. You will also notice that the engine idles roughly when it is running. This is because, again, there is not enough ignition going on inside of the cylinders. In order to run smoothly, you need each spark plug to detonate in the correct order.

An Engine That Misfires

Spark plugs that are failing to detonate or not detonating in the correct order can cause the engine in your light-duty truck to misfire. When this happens, the vehicle will jerk and sputter as you are driving. In fact, you may have problems with the engine stalling frequently if it is misfiring badly.

Acceleration That Lags

The misfiring can also cause your acceleration to lag. The engine produces combustion to generate power. If the combustion process is impeded by worn spark plugs, your vehicle will not have enough power to accelerate when you press down on the accelerator.

Poor Fuel Economy

Finally, all of the above will reduce your light-duty truck’s fuel economy. If your truck is overdue for an ignition tune-up that includes changing out the spark plugs, the engine will not run efficiently. Consequently, it will burn more fuel than it normally does.
