Signs My Heavy-Duty Truck’s Fuel Filter Is Clogged

Whether diesel or gasoline, Moose Jaw Truck Shop can replace your heavy-duty truck’s fuel filter when it needs it. The need for this service is generally every 30,000 miles, so plan accordingly and bring your truck in when the time has come for a new fuel filter. If you fail to replace the fuel filter, you may start to have problems with your heavy-duty truck. Let’s talk about these problems below.

The Truck Won’t Start

You will start to have difficulties getting your truck to start if the fuel filter is clogged. The reason why is obvious and that is that the gasoline cannot get into the engine because it cannot pass through the clogged filter. As the filter starts to clog, the engine will fight you to start. Eventually, the filter will clog so much that it will block any fuel from getting into the engine and your truck won’t start at all.

The Engine Misfires

Your truck’s engine is also going to misfire if the fuel filter is clogged. The reason why is that there may not be enough fuel in each cylinder to generate combustion. When this happens, one or more of the cylinders may not fire and, as a consequence, the engine will misfire. If your heavy-duty truck’s engine is misfiring, drive to our shop so we can inspect it and replace the fuel filter if that is the problem.

The Idle Is Rough

The misfiring engine is also going to give the truck a rough idle. In fact, depending on the severity of the clog in the fuel filter, your engine may also stall when you are sitting at an idle. There is no way that your heavy-duty truck’s engine is going to run smoothly if the fuel filter inhibits the fuel flow. The fuel needs to be able to flow quickly and easily through the filter so it can be sprayed into the cylinders.

The Fuel Pump Malfunctions

Finally, a clogged fuel filter makes the fuel pump work harder. This can cause the fuel pump to malfunction and give out before its time, which is about 100,000 miles. If the fuel pump is struggling to push the fuel through to the injectors because the filter is clogged, you may hear whining noises in your fuel tank. This is an indication that the fuel pump has a motor that is being overworked.
