Odd Engine Noises Your Heavy-Duty Truck Should Not Make

If your heavy-duty truck or big rig is making strange noises in the engine, head to Moose Jaw Truck Shop right away. We will inspect the engine thoroughly to find out why it is making strange noises. Once we have determined the problem, we will provide you with a detailed estimate to resolve the issue. The following are five noises that you should never hear coming from your engine and their common causes.

Hissing

If you have a fluid leak in the engine, you may hear a hissing sound as the fluid drips onto scorching engine parts. The engine will also hiss if it has a vacuum leak. The hissing sound is made by the vacuum pressure escaping from a crack or hole in a vacuum hose. You may also hear a hissing sound if you have a crack in the exhaust manifold gasket or the exhaust manifold.

Knocking

Your heavy-duty truck or big rig might also end up with the knocking engine if there is a detonation problem in the cylinders. Specifically, low-octane fuel, an air-heavy fuel mixture, or worn spark plugs can cause multiple detonations in the cylinders that sound like knocking. The engine will also knock if the rod bearings are worn in the cylinder block.

Popping

We mentioned above that a leaking exhaust manifold will hiss. It may also pop or tap, especially when you first fire up the heavy-duty truck or big rig. In some cases, the catalytic converter will also make a popping noise when it is clogged or if it has been stolen. Unfortunately, because the converters are larger in heavy-duty trucks, it is common for converters to be stolen from these vehicles.

Rumbling

The engine will also make a rumbling noise if the catalytic converter has been stolen, especially when you press down on the accelerator to pick up speed. Another thing that can make the engine rumble is a hole in the muffler. In either case, the engine is also going to be much louder than it normally is.

Squealing

Finally, your engine may squeal if the accessory belt is loose or the tensioner needs to be replaced. As an aside, if your heavy-duty truck or big rig’s brakes are squealing, they could be overheating. Squealing brakes are also an indication that the brake pad surfaces are too low and the pads need to be replaced.
