Six Common Problems With Diesel Engines

Diesel engines come with many advantages over gasoline-powered engines, but they can also experience problems. Moose Jaw Truck Shop is staffed with diesel engine experts ready to repair any problems your big rig, light-duty, or heavy-duty truck might have. Here is a list of six common problems we repair regularly to get our customers back in their diesel trucks and on the road.

1. Problems Starting the Vehicle

Lack of maintenance can make starting your diesel engine even harder than it normally is. If your truck is cranking too many times before it fires up, bring it to our shop for an inspection. We’ll find the reason why it won’t start easily and fix the problem.

2. Lack of Engine Power

If your diesel truck is struggling to produce power, you likely have a fuel problem. A clogged fuel filter will definitely affect your diesel engine’s power, as will clogged injectors and a throttle linkage that has loosened over time. We can restore your engine’s power.

3. Contaminated Diesel Fuel

Did you know that diesel fuel can get contaminated easier than gasoline can? The reason why is that the fuel is thicker. Many things can contaminate your diesel fuel and affect your engine’s performance including water, soot, and glycol.

4. Excessive Black Exhaust

You expect little puffs of exhaust smoke from your diesel’s tailpipe but excessive exhaust is a sign of an engine problem. The most common cause of excess black exhaust is burning fuel, so you may have too much fuel being released into the combustion chamber.

5. Oil That Has Oxidized

If you don’t drive your diesel truck regularly, your oil may oxidize. Oil oxidation occurs in vehicles that have been left dormant for months. Tiny air bubbles fill the oil and affect its ability to protect the engine. Driving with oxidized oil will damage the engine.

6. An Increase in Engine Noise

Finally, diesel engines are louder than gasoline engines but they shouldn’t be overbearing. If your engine has suddenly gotten much louder, you may have a problem with your exhaust system. You also shouldn’t hear knocking, pinging, or squealing coming from the engine.
