Signs My Light-Duty Truck’s Alternator Is Going Bad

Moose Jock Truck Shop advises that your light-duty truck relies on the alternator to generate up to 14.5 volts of electricity. The alternator lasts, on average, about 100,000 miles or 10 years. If you notice any of the following problems, they are signs that the alternator is going bad. Do not worry. We can replace the alternator no matter what you drive, including a big rig.

Accessory Malfunction

The alternator provides power to your vehicle’s accessories. They will begin to slow down or malfunction if the alternator is unable to generate enough electricity for them. For example, you may notice that it takes much longer for your power windows to open and close.

Burning Rubber or Wires

Sometimes, when the alternator malfunctions, it actually produces more than 14.5 volts of electricity. When this happens, it overloads the electrical system. Consequently, you may smell the odors of an electrical fire such as burning rubber or wires. Don’t drive your automobile under this condition.

Frequent Engine Stalls

The alternator also supplies power to your light-duty truck’s spark plugs. This allows them to generate a spark to ignite the air and fuel in each cylinder. If the alternator is going bad, it may be unable to supply the spark plugs with the power that they need to fire. Consequently, your truck will stall frequently.

Grinding or Whining Sounds

You may be able to hear that your alternator is going bad. If you hear grinding sounds coming from the engine, this could be the alternator’s internal mechanisms wearing against each other. You may also hear whining or squealing sounds if the alternator belt needs to be tightened or replaced.

Hard Starts/Dead Battery

The alternator is responsible for keeping the battery charged, so you may end up having difficulties getting your light-duty truck started if the alternator is malfunctioning. Even if you jump-start the battery, the alternator will not keep it charged and it will die once it has discharged.

Problems With the Lights

You can tell that the alternator is going bad if it is hard to see at night because your headlights are too dim. You may also notice that the interior lights aren’t as bright as they normally are. In some cases, the lights may flicker or they may be too bright if the alternator is generating too much voltage.
